Paris Goes on Vacation

Parisians camp in style (I want one).

This weekend is the big exodus, when most Parisians flee town for the beaches or the countryside until September. And although there are certainly a few shops and restaurants closed for the month of August, the city is hardly deserted. Even compared to five years ago, more and more establishments have decided to stay open (Berthillon ice cream on the Ile St-Louis is not one of them…after all, why keep an ice cream shop open in August?). With Paris Plage, open air cinema, free concerts, cheaper hotel rooms, and the generally wonderful experience of an uncrowded city (well, aside from the Champs Elysées for today’s Tour de France finale), it’s a shame more people don’t visit in August. Not that I’m complaining…
