The Palais Garnier is one of the most beautiful monuments in Paris. It was built under Napoleon III as part of the Parisian reconstruction project carried out by Baron Haussmann during the Second Empire. The architect was the unknown 35-year-old Charles Garnier, who gave the opera house its name, Palais Garnier. Building work lasted fifteen years from 1860 to 1875, interrupted by the Franco-Prussian war, the fall of the Empire and the 1871 Commune.
