New Metro Cars

Little by little, the rickety old metro cars are being replaced by sleek new ones with big windows, striped seats and bright red walls at the front and back. Also, more important in the summer, they have air-conditioning! These photos are from line 5, but I’ve also seen them on Line 1, 2, 3, 4, and 14.

  • Hallelujah to the air conditioning. I also like how many of the new trains (on line 1 for example) are just one continuous space w/ no divisions. Gives the train a more open & comfortable feel.

  • I love the new cars – i'm on the line 2 and was really appreciating the air-conditioning on some of the last summer on hot days. I have a theory that when everyone's commute is just a little better (i.e. not sweating like crazy and grumpy from the heat) everyone starts the day with just a little better attitude – so i like to think it has a good attitude ripple effect that goes beyond just the metro ride.

  • Line 14 never had a driver (opened in 1999), and now Line 1 will have no driver. Eventually they'll all be like that. No more drivers, no more driver strikes! 🙂

  • Wow! Pretty snazzy. Some of those old ones had quite a bit of age on them. I've heard that some lines now have automated trains (no drivers). Have you heard about that?
