I was on the Champs-Elysées today when a busload of swimmers (alas, they were not wearing their Speedos) went by in a doubledecker bus, music blasting, everyone waving and honking horns. The celebration was for the French national swim team, which won a total of 23 medals at the European Swimming Championships in Budapest ten days ago.
After their lunch at the Palais d’Elysée (no word on whether Carla made an appearance), they took a victory bus ride down the Avenue des Champs-Elysées. Still suffering from the ongoing embarassment of the dismal World Cup performance and players’ strike (several sports careers have gone down the drain this week), it’s nice to be able to rally behind Alain Bernard, Camille Lacourt and the rest of the swimmers who’ve brought a bit of glory back to the Tricolor.
