Review by Sue Nally

An old French expression says that girls are born in the flower garden, while boys arrive in the cabbage patch. The boutique Création zoé d. Rose et Chou-fleur (Rose and Cauliflower) has taken this whimsical imagery and created a microcosm dedicated to the magic of childhood and the joy of color and sparkle. Brainchild of the créateur/owner “zoé d.”, the petite boutique near the Canal St. Martin is the perfect address when you’re looking for one-of-a kind gifts crafted by a Parisian artist.

Enter the world of zoé d. on the rue des Vinaigriers, where everything bears her stamp, from the fairy-tale colors to the charming illustrations on the wall. Zoe d. is a multi-talented artist , with a collection of handmade women’s jewelry, home decor, children’s clothing and accessories.

Her necklaces, bracelets and earrings, are non-allergenic (guaranteed without nickel) and feature semi-precious stones such as agate, Swarovski crystal, amethyst, rose quartz and bohemian glass. As an example of price range, her bold necklaces of elongated and diamond shaped beads are priced at €59.

Her one-of-a-kind, lined, baby and children’s clothing (girls to age 8, boys currently to toddler) are often reversible displaying a craftsmanship that is seldom seen in today’s world of mass-produced, imported goods. Dresses, overalls, and jumpsuits range from €50 to €60.

The standout item is by far the princess costumes. You may have seen the proliferation of pricey princess-wear at a popular American theme park outside Paris. What little girl can resist? Zoé d.’s unique confections are satin polyester, accented with coordinating ribbon and an organza jacket. Two layers of tulle and cotton petticoat guarantee that all-important criteria: “twirl-ability.“

The gowns are adjustable to grow with the “princess,” and can even be adapted for use in weddings upon request. Prices are set at €99 and €119 depending on the variation. Detailed photos are available on the website. www.rose-et-chou-fleur.com. French only website.

M° Jacques Bonsergent or even M° Château D’Eau may be closer but walking up the Canal St. Martin from M° République is a more pleasant walk.

Store Hours: Tuesday to Saturday from 11:00 to 8:00 pm.
Sundays from 3:00 pm to 7:30 pm. Closed Mondays.
