You don’t have to spend a fortune for a central hotel room next to the Louvre with windows overlooking the Tuileries Gardens. Tucked under the same stone arcades as the swanky Meurice palace hotel, the Hotel Brighton offers the same views for a fraction of the price. The style is an elegant mix of modern and traditional Parisian, with the most recently-renovated rooms featuring flat-screen TVs and heated towel racks. Smaller rooms look onto a courtyard, handy if you want more quiet (Rue de Rivoli, just outside, can be noisy if you have the windows open). Street-facing rooms have balconies and view onto the gardens, the Louvre, and the Rive Gauche in the distance. The least expensive rooms are on the mezzanine level (with windows under the arches along rue de Rivoli), while the 1st floor (2nd floor in US terms) has the highest ceilings. In any case, almost every room is different in this historic hotel, so if you don’t like the one you’re in, it may be possible to inquire about switching to another.

61 rooms, WiFi. Doubles from €175- €190.
